REHABILITATION PROJECT
NKONKA VALLEY
EST
2015
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The Kranzkloof Nature Reserve defines the character of our neighbourhood; it adds a wilderness element to our suburban setting and is the reason we experience the pleasure of prolific birdlife and other wildlife around our properties. However, the confined area of the reserve limits the capacity and diversity of wildlife it can support. Any extension of the area is invaluable. The Nkonka Valley adjoins the reserve and has the potential to extend the protected area by several hectares.

The Nkonka Valley has been heavily impacted by invader species. In 2015, the Park Crescent residents bordering the eastern section of the valley formed an informal association dedicated to restoring and preserving the natural flora and fauna. There are two principal vegetation types in the lower valley - riverine forest fringes the Nkonka stream and tributary watercourses, while the slopes support KZN sandstone sourveld. This is a highly endangered type of grassland only occurring in the Kranzkloof area and the Vernon Crookes Game Reserve.

The Nkonka Rehabilitation Project has made fantastic headway over the years, facilitated by the hard work of residents, and the on-going support of the Kloof Conservancy. We appreciate any support we receive from the community at large.
